Fans of Young Sheldon seemingly missed a pretty big Easter egg featured on multiple episodes of Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.
Creator Steve Holland confirmed that Georgie’s (Montana Jordan) Ford F-150 is the same car that belonged to his late father, George Sr.
“There’s some real weight to that if viewers caught it,” Holland told TVLine on Wednesday, November 13, about featuring the truck in multiple episodes of the spinoff series. “We didn’t really want to make it a big deal, but when Young Sheldon was ending and we were starting this show, the transportation department [at Warner Bros.] was asking us, ‘Do you want us to keep this truck or get rid of it?’ And we were, like, ‘No, we should definitely keep it.’”
Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage wanted to find a way to honor Georgie’s connection with his dad.
“It makes sense that Georgie would drive that truck,” Holland continued. “It’s his dad’s truck, and he has an emotional connection to it, so it just seemed like that was the right thing to do.”
In addition to the vehicle, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage returned to key locations such as the Bluebell Diner, Nate’s Roadhouse and more in the Thanksgiving episode airing Thursday, November 14.
“There are pieces of [each set] that are original, but they did have to be redesigned to work for multicam,” Holland revealed. “Obviously, in Young Sheldon, it was a complete, four-wall set. We even had to redesign the McAllister living room because of where the [front] door was.”
He concluded: “It hadn’t been that long since [The] Big Bang [Theory] — it had only been five years — but being, like, ‘Oh, that’s right, everything has to play in a proscenium now’ was interesting. We had to figure out these sets [from Young Sheldon] and make them feel like they’re the same sets.”
The Big Bang Theory created a franchise after its 12-year run. The hit series, which aired from 2007 to 2019, starred Jim Parsons (Sheldon Cooper), Kaley Cuoco (Penny Teller), Johnny Galecki (Leonard Hofstadter), Simon Helberg (Howard Wolowitz), Kunal Nayyar (Raj Koothrappali), Mayim Bialik (Amy Farrah Fowler) and Melissa Rauch (Bernadette Rostenkowski) as a group of friends made up of physicists and their significant others.
After a successful CBS run, The Big Bang Theory branched off with a prequel series starring Iain Armitage in the role of Sheldon when he was a child prodigy growing up in Texas. The universe got even bigger with Sheldon’s older brother, Georgie, scoring a spinoff with Mandy (Emily Osment).
Rachel Bay Jones, who plays Audrey on the current CBS series, previously told Us Weekly about Annie Potts and Zoe Perry‘s appearance in the pilot — and whether there are plans for more returns.
“I love all of them, and they definitely [are] coming back. We just filmed and wrapped the fifth episode, and a bunch of [Young Sheldon] alums were there for that,” she teased about Perry and Potts, who play Mary Cooper and Meemaw, respectively. “We did a Thanksgiving episode with everybody and it was heaven.”
Jones, 55, expressed her hope that actors from The Big Bang Theory franchise continue to show interest in returning on screen.
“If Meemaw and Audrey could get into it, that would make me really happy because I love Annie Potts more than almost anyone on this planet,” she continued. “It would be really fun to continue to play with her. And we are promised their presence since it’s a small town, so you can’t escape all those other inhabitants.”
Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage airs on CBS Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET. Episodes are available to stream on Paramount+ the next day.
