I haven’t released my official 2025 trend predictions, but the fisherman aesthetic is one of the early styles of the year that has completely enraptured me. This trend is a departure from everyone’s favorite coastal grandma look, which features Nancy Meyer-inspired whites, khakis, and soft blues. This aesthetic is your Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou hero, but even moodier and more rugged. Think Irish sailor or New England “Mainer”—call it coastal grandfather! And really, anything that feels “moody” I’m going to be all over, you know.
The essence of the fisherman look is layering pieces, such as textural chunky knit sweaters (bonus points if it’s oversized), natural rope and leather accessories (woven loafers like these or these), denim or wool chore coats, and nautical-inspired crewnecks with corduroy pants or wide-leg denim on the bottom. The fit is a little more boxy, a little more masculine-inspired. But you can make the fisherman aesthetic fun and feminine with some fish charms on your bag or necklace and a red lipstick. Plus, throw in some durable Chelsea boots or a classic yellow slicker and you’ll be set in any weather. I’m completely on board!!
For the home, think vintage-y seascapes, pinstriped wallpaper, model ships as decor. And don’t touch any wood stripper, because rich wood tones (with lots of worn charm) are sailing to the top.
