As the 2024 U.S. presidential election approaches, a new survey by Realtor.com reveals that politics are playing an increasingly influential role in where Americans decide to live, particularly among millennials.
The survey found that nearly 1 in 4 adults (23%) report that local and national politics significantly impact their decision-making process when choosing where to live. Millennials are even more influenced, with 33% stating that politics are a key factor in their housing decisions.
Even the data shows that generation is highly influenced by politics in their housing choices, smaller portions of Gen Z (20%), Gen X (14%), and baby boomers (10%) would also be willing to move to be among like-minded voting people.
This raises the question: could a similar trend emerge in Australia, where political affiliations also differ widely across states and regions?
“Choosing where to live is often a complex decision, and for many Americans, especially millennials, local and national politics are factors that influence where they live,” Realtor.com Chief Economist Danielle Hale said.
Realtor.com Senior Economic Research Analyst Hannah Jones agreed, saying that generation is a lot more politically active and dynamic when it comes to making life choices.
“Millennials are in a phase of life where they are thinking about the type of community in which they want to buy a home and grow their roots.
“It makes sense that they, more than any other age group, think it is important to live in a place where political views align.”
