Ironman Louisville triathlon brings top athletes to city. Here's look inside Sunday's race

The swimming portion of the IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon ran as planned Sunday, though an algae advisory for the Ohio River remained active ahead of the race.

A harmful algal bloom was detected in the Ohio River near Towhead Island earlier this month by scientists with the state Division of Water.

In a statement posted on Facebook, IRONMAN said its officials collected water samples while “in direct communication” with the Division of Water. Officials stated samples collected Friday had detected no harmful algal bloom.

The race was began with athletes swimming 1.2 miles from the Louisville Community Boathouse to Waterfront Park. A 56-mile bike ride along River Road and Oldham County followed before the half-marathon run along the river and through city parks, finishing downtown at Fourth Street Live.
