CCSD police seize 20 guns, 6 from a high school in North Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — As students prepare to head back into class Monday, new numbers show Clark County school police have seized 20 guns halfway through the 2024/2025 school year.

According to the Clark County School District’s firearm confiscation report, nearly a third of those guns were found at Legacy High School in North Las Vegas.

Police have confiscated six guns at Legacy High since August 2024, with at least four reportedly belonging to students. In one case, a police report showed a gun belonged to a gang member.

Guns were most recently found at Legacy High on Dec. 3 and 6, according to the school district.

“My daughter comes here every day. We send our kids to school, expecting them to come safe,” Tiffany Sanchez, a Legacy High parent, said in August 2024.

On Aug. 16, Clark County school police found two guns in a car. One belonged to a student and the other to an adult. Court records show prosecutors chose not to charge that adult. The teen’s records are sealed.

Three days later on Aug. 19, CCSPD said a substitute teacher at Legacy High School brought a gun on campus. She was arrested, but court records showed her case was dismissed after she completed the terms of her sentencing.

“They can’t focus on school if their mind is divided between their studies and what’s happening,” Juan Ibarra, a Legacy parent, added in August 2024.

In another gun incident, CCSDPD went to Legacy’s library on Oct. 23 after a student refused to be searched.

According to police, the student “was asked if he has anything on him that he shouldn’t have to which he replied, ‘yes, a firearm’ while motioning to his left front pocket toward me.”

The teen reportedly admitted to stealing the gun from his mother and carrying it for protection.

Police said the student “does hang out with some that are considered gang members. [He] declined to provide their names or what gang, but did advise that they represent ‘blue’ which is typically a reference to a ‘crip.’”

Mojave High School, Del Sol High School, Swainston Middle School, and Cheyenne High School were the other CCSD campuses where police located a gun so far this academic year.

CCSD policy states any student who brings a firearm on campus is automatically expelled.
