Amorim 'mad' as Man Utd show fight | Bruno: Why can't we do this every week?

Ruben Amorim said he was “really mad” to leave Anfield with only a point after Manchester United’s 2-2 draw at Liverpool, as captain Bruno Fernandes questioned why the team are not able to produce performances like that every week.

Lisandro Martinez blasted United in front early in the second half before Cody Gakpo’s leveller was followed by a Mohamed Salah penalty that looked to have earned league leaders Liverpool victory.

But Amad Diallo swept home to earn unfancied United a point. However, when asked if it was a step in the right direction, Amorim could not hide his disappointment at not winning at Anfield.

“Yes, because the expectations were so much different than what we saw during the game,” Amorim told Sky Sports.

“I think I get more mad because of the other games so it’s even harder to understand some things.”

Put to him that Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes had expressed similar frustrations about the team not being able to consistently produce performances like the one displayed at Anfield, Amorim said: “This is not about the system, it’s not about the technique. It’s about something else and this is hard to understand, even for the coach.

“I think it was a point deserved but it is just one point and I think we should get mad and disappointed, more than the other day [in the defeats against] Newcastle, Bournemouth, Nottingham [Forest] – more than those days, today we need to be really disappointed.

“If we play against Liverpool every day we will do that. So we have to do it against any opponent and to understand that we have to fight really bad to get out of this situation.

“The way we were really competitive, that is the crucial thing going forward.

“I’m happy for the performance, not happy for the result but I’m really mad because of the other games.”

Daniel Sturridge and Roy Keane debate whether it was a bad miss from Harry Maguire or a bad pass from Joshua Zirkzee as Manchester United spurned a late opportunity to win it at Anfield

Asked if he had conveyed that to his players, Amorim said: “No, because I have to calm down and to say the right things. We are in a difficult moment but it’s hard not to get really mad.

“Again, I’m happy with the performance but not for the result. But I am really mad because of the other games.

“We have to move on. Congratulations to the lads for the performance, not for the result.”

After drawing with Liverpool, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes questioned why his team don’t perform like they did at Anfield every week

Bruno Fernandes also had mixed emotions after the thrilling 2-2 draw at Anfield. Asked about the criticism United had received recently, Fernandes told Sky Sports: “Criticised and fairly because the position in the table says it all, we lost too many points.

“Even today we can’t be happy with a draw because we need points more than they did.

“It was a really good result, we could have even won the game in the end but it’s a fair result.

“I’m pretty upset because if we show this today at Anfield against Liverpool, who are first in the league and probably the outstanding team in the Premier League this season, why can’t we do this every week?

“Finally I did a proper performance overall and I think we need much more from ourselves to get something from this season.”

Talking on the Gary Neville Podcast, the former Manchester United defender said he was really surprised by the Red Devils’ performance at Anfield to grab a draw

Sky Sports’ Gary Neville on Manchester United’s performance:

“It was a massive change. It was the best performance under Ruben Amorim if not all season, by a mile, to come to Anfield, the best team in the league all year.

“It surpasses the victory at [Manchester] City – they’re in a bad moment and they were fortunate to get that victory.

“But today they were magnificent, they fully deserved their [draw]. There’s no Manchester United fan who woke up and wasn’t expecting the worst.

“[Kobbie] Mainoo, [Manuel] Ugarte and [Bruno] Fernandes controlled midfield against [Ryan] Gravenberch, [Curtis] Jones and [Alexis] Mac Allister, who have been outstanding all season.

“The backline did well but they were the standouts. It was an outstanding performance.”

Jamie Carragher, Daniel Sturridge, Roy Keane and Gary Neville discuss Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract status at Liverpool and if he should stay at Anfield or leave for Real Madrid

Sky Sports’ Roy Keane:

“Manchester United turned up. They showed a bit of passion. They did it at Manchester City recently as well.

“The argument to all of this though is that you can’t just pick and choose when you want to turn up for a game at Manchester United.

“I don’t think anyone would have predicted them scoring two goals today or nearly nicking it at the end.

“But the key is that they have to back it up.”
