It’s official: Jennifer Love Hewitt is returning to her horror roots.
“It’s never too late to go back,” Hewitt wrote via Instagram in December 2024, confirming that she will reprise her role as Julie James in the upcoming reboot of the 1997 film I Know What You Did Last Summer.
“Julie James is returning,” Hewitt continued. “I know what you will be doing next summer!”
In May 2024, Sony Pictures announced the upcoming franchise reboot was officially a go. The horror flick is set to be directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who cowrote the screenplay with writer Sam Lansky.

Hewitt’s official participation in the much-awaited reboot has only added to fans’ excitement over the film, which reportedly started filming in November 2024 and is scheduled to hit theaters in the summer of 2025.

“Listen, I loved doing those movies,” Hewitt exclusively told Us Weekly in May 2024. “There is nothing more fun than doing a horror movie. It’s the best. Julie James is awesome. I do think that there’s unfinished business there, and so I would be happy to do it.”

“It’s fun that it’s out there and it’s been fun to see people’s reaction that they would be excited for that,” Hewitt told Us back in May 2024, adding that both her and Prinze Jr. were in a “holding period” at the time, waiting to hear whether they would be involved.

On Thanksgiving 2024, Sarah Michelle Gellar — who’s married to Prinze Jr. and who also starred in the 1997 original — posted a photo from the set (although her character died in the original).
“You would think that being in my position, I know what rules are on sets when they say ‘closed sets,’ ya know?” the actress confessed while appearing on Live With Kelly and Mark. “So my husband’s starring in the movie, and it was Thanksgiving so I took our kids to Australia to go out there and visit him. And I was sitting on set, and I was like, ‘Oh, what a great picture,’ and then I posted it.”
